Biography
Giulio Andreotti (1919-2013) was the embodiment of Italian political power in the Cold War era. Serving as Prime Minister seven times, Foreign Minister eight times, and holding continuous parliamentary presence from 1946 to 2013, he was known as "Divo Giulio" (Divine Julius) and "The Hunchback."
A founding member of Christian Democracy (DC), he navigated Italy's complex politics through the "years of lead" terrorism, the Mafia wars, and the Tangentopoli collapse. Famous for his aphorisms ("Power wears out those who don't have it"), he was also infamous for alleged ties to the Sicilian Mafia.
In 1995, he was charged with ordering the murder of journalist Mino Pecorelli and with mafia association. Though convicted at appeal in 2002, the Supreme Court overturned the verdict in 2003. He remained senator for life until his death.
