Biography
Benedetto "Bettino" Craxi (1934-2000) led the Italian Socialist Party (PSI) and served as Prime Minister from 1983-1987. A charismatic and polarizing figure, he modernized Italian socialism but became the symbol of systemic political corruption.
Born in Milan, he rose through PSI ranks during the Cold War. As PM, he projected Italian power internationally but oversaw a system of institutionalized kickbacks. When the Tangentopoli scandal broke in 1992, Craxi became its most prominent casualty.
Facing 27 years in prison sentences, he fled to Hammamet, Tunisia in 1994, protected by President Ben Ali. He died in exile in 2000, never serving his sentences.
