Biography
Ricardo Espírito Santo Silva Salgado (born 1944) was the patriarch of Portugal's most powerful banking dynasty, serving as CEO of Banco Espírito Santo (BES) for decades. The Espírito Santo family had dominated Portuguese finance for over a century.
Under his leadership, BES became one of Portugal's largest banks—until it spectacularly collapsed in July 2014, revealing €3.6 billion in hidden losses. The state was forced to provide a €4.9 billion bailout, creating Novo Banco from BES's remains.
Investigators found Salgado had used related-party transactions to hide losses, falsified accounts, and deceived regulators. His close relationship with PM José Sócrates became a focus of the Operation Marquis investigation.
